Life can turn tragic in an instant with an unforeseen accident that leaves a lasting imprint. However, there’s no point dwelling on the past as overcoming these challenges and moving forward is the only way to go. Although the road might seem tough, it’s comforting to know that people and even animals are always ready to offer their support when we need it the most.
Joey Ramp, a former enthusiastic horse trainer, was unexpectedly faced with a completely different life after a terrifying horse accident in 2006. As a result of the incident, she suffered from 23 bone fractures and significant injuries to her prefrontal cortex and left side of her body.
Ramp was filled with resilience that fueled her desire to return to the field of education, specifically focusing on neuroscience. She had a constant companion in Sampson, her service dog, who supported her through the hardships she faced along the way. With Sampson by her side, Joey set out on a path that led her to earn two Bachelor of Arts degrees in neuroscience and pursue a PhD at the University of Illinois’ laboratory. Although there were obstacles, such as Sampson’s restricted entry into the lab, Ramp’s unwavering determination pushed her to overcome these challenges and achieve her ultimate goals.
After much consideration, the university gave Sampson a special authorization to enter the laboratory. However, they implemented strict rules, requiring him to wear full personal protective equipment (PPE). It was quite a sight to see Sampson in his PPE, and for some reason, it only made him more charming and lovable.
Sampson, the lovable golden retriever, received extensive training to effortlessly conform to the strict rules of the laboratory, which he successfully achieved with impressive grace.
Joey is currently working alongside other academic institutions to promote the inclusion of service dogs in laboratory settings. This collaborative effort aims to integrate the invaluable contributions of these compassionate canines into revolutionary scientific advancements. Sampson’s tale is a testament to loyalty and determination, highlighting the remarkable influence that animals can have on humanity’s pursuit of enlightenment and innovation.
